- Salt - Essential for bringing out all the flavors
- Roma tomato - Juicy, but not watery like other types
- Red onion - Adds crunch and color (see below for onion tips)
- Cilantro - Totally optional, but adds that classic guac flavor
Best Onion for Guacamole
We always use red onion-it's got a nice crunch and a little sweetness that plays well with the creamy avocado. But if red isn't your thing, try white onion or even shallots. And honestly, if you're not a fan of onion, leave it out.
Ingredient Tips
- Want heat? Add chopped jalapeño or serrano pepper.
- No lime? Use lemon juice instead.
- Hate cilantro? Skip it-guacamole should taste the way you like it.
Step-by-Step Recipe Directions

Cut the avocados in half and remove the seed. Cut into chunks and place into a mixing bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado if you want a creamier texture.
Add lime juice, garlic, and salt. Mix.

Add the finely chopped red onion, diced tomatoes, and cilantro.

Mix until blended. Taste the guacamole and adjust any seasonings as desired.
