Recipe Ingredients
- Taco Meat - Ground beef or ground turkey with your favorite taco seasoning.
- Tortilla Chips - Thicker chips hold up better when making nachos.
- Shredded Cheese - Cheddar, Colby Jack, or your favorite cheese blend.
- Black Beans - Canned, rinsed and drained well.
- Diced Tomatoes - Diced tomatoes and freshness and color to the nachos.
- Sour Cream - Sour cream helps to balance the spicy ingredients.
- Guacamole - Store bought or make your own guacamole.
- Jalapenos - Fresh or canned, your choice.
- White Queso Dip - Whether you use a homemade queso dip or a pre-prepared one, warming it before use is key.
- Green Onions - For garnish, color and flavor.
- Red Onions - For garnish, color and flavor.
Variations
- In place of ground meat, try shredded chicken or pulled pork.
- Omit the meat all together and add more black beans or refried beans. You can even add taco seasoning to the beans for that familiar taco flavor.
- Add any other toppings your friends and family might enjoy.
Prep the Ingredients
Before beginning to assemble the layered nachos;
- prepare the taco meat
- prepare the guacamole
- dice the tomato and onions
- slice the jalapenos, if needed
- shred the cheese
- rinse and drain the beans
- warm the queso dip
What should I assemble the nachos in?
You probably have many items in your kitchen that would work perfectly to assemble the layered nachos.
- I like to use the insert for my rice cooker or Instant Pot.
- You can use a Dutch oven or large pan.
- A bowl works great. One that is narrow at the bottom and wide at the top will create more of a pyramid shape rather than just layers.
- A coffee can or container, washed out well, is great for a taller stack of nachos.
Step-by-Step Recipe Directions
- Step 1: Start by adding a layer of tortilla chips and then drizzle with a layer of the warmed queso dip.
- Step 2: Next, add some of the taco meat.
- Step 3: Now add a bit of shredded cheese and some black beans.
- Step 4: Then we are back to the tortilla chips. Continue layers until you reach the top of your container.
- Step 5: To serve, invert the container of nachos over a serving platter or baking sheet. slowly lift the container to reveal the layers of nachos.
- Step 6: Finish off with adding the diced onions, tomatoes, and jalapenos.
Mom Tip
Don't worry if you don't have a perfectly stacked layer of nachos. Nachos are meant to be rustic and they will be delicious either way!
Finally, drizzle or top some guacamole and sour cream on top. Serve and enjoy!
