Is it a trick? Or, is it a treat? When I decided to add some color to a batch of cookies for a bit of Halloween flair, it didn't even enter my mind that people would assume that they were made with pumpkin. That is why I call them Trick or Treat Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Trick or Treat Chocolate Chip Cookies

The cookies are finished, and cooling on the counter. I let everyone know that they are ready to eat. First of all my husband comes in. He hesitates... then asks "are they pumpkin"? As soon as I say no, they are chocolate chip, he happily takes one. For him, this was a treat.

As the day went on I found myself explaining that they were not pumpkin and by the end of the day most of them were gone. A good sign for sure.

Getting the color took a bit more food coloring than I thought it would. For this recipe, I used 6 drops red and 24 drops yellow. I am sure that the amount of coloring will need to be adjusted depending on the brand or type of coloring used.

That same day my son had friends over and I told them to help themselves to the cookies, they did. I love it when people enjoy the food that I prepare.  Within hours this batch of cookies was gone, and for me, that was a real treat. Happy Halloween!

    ½ cup Granulated Sugar

    ¼ cup Brown Sugar

    1 Egg

    1 teaspoon Vanilla

    Red Food Coloring

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Beat together the softened butter with the sugars. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well. Start adding the food coloring and continue to mix until you get the color you would like. I used 6 drops red and 24 drops yellow food coloring.

Next, add the flour along with the baking soda and salt. Stir until combined. Finally, fold in the chocolate chips.

Scoop the cookie dough onto a cookie sheet using a large cookie scoop or ice cream scoop. I used about ¼ cup of batter per cookie.

Bake the Trick or Treat Chocolate Chip Cookies for 15 - 18 minutes until done.
