Recently I started a series of posts on Bulking Up. My son, now in college has been asking for protein and carb recipes. The other day I put together this very simple Creole Hamburger and Rice.

When I heard my son say that it didn't matter if his food had any flavor, he just needed the protein and carbs for his exercise goals, I cringed. The only way to convince him that it doesn't have to take a lot of effort was to cook something and prove it.
One of the "meals" he has cooked himself a few times is plain rice that has been mixed with plain crumbled hamburger. I mean come on kiddo! Blah!
Well, I was determined to show him how easy it could be to cook a quick tasty meal. So, I took some hamburger, added some seasoning and tomatoes and came up with this Creole Hamburger and Rice. Guess what? He loved it!

The bonus is that this is also a simple and affordable recipe he will be able to enjoy when he continues his college education away from home. This is a dinner that he can easily cook with basic pantry items.
You can make your own Creole Seasoning, or just buy your favorite already made brand. If Creole isn't your thing, or you just want to switch up this simple recipe, try Italian, or Garlic 'n Herb seasoning instead.

This recipe is very similar to a hamburger and rice Creole recipe that I grew up on. Passed down to my Mom, from my Grandma. They made the version with garlic, tomatoes, hamburger and rice. Mom would mix the tomatoes with the hamburger, garlic (more the better ), then let it cook for awhile on the stove top while you prepare your rice. Mom always made rice separately and that way you could get more rice with your Creole if you preferred. From the time I was in preschool I was sent off to school with some of this packed in my thermos to have a hot meal. My teachers were so delighted by just the way this dish smelled, that they had to know my Mom's secret. It was definitely always one of my favorite dishes and always will be. I passed the love for this dish down to my children, just like generations before me. However you decide to make this. You will absolutely love it! Enjoy!

Look my guy. I get it’s supposed to be appealing but there’s not a person in this world besides the Amish who have fire roasted tomatoes.
Cook This Again Mom
Hi,
I buy fire-roasted tomatoes all the time. I prefer the Hunts brand, but there are many other brands available. If you prefer, you can easily substitute with regular diced tomatoes.
