RawSpiceBar sent me samples of their product to try and review on my blog. I received no other compensation from RawSpiceBar other than the free samples of their spices. The opinion expressed in this review is mine alone.
RawSpiceBar is a subscription service that ships 3 freshly ground spice blends to you every month.
RawSpiceBar’s goal is to search the world and find the most authentic spice blends so you can experience flavors and dishes that you might not otherwise have a chance to try.
Their subscription service is only $6 per month. They also have gift subscriptions which would make a perfect gift for those ‘hard to buy for’ friends and family that enjoy cooking and experiencing new flavors.
The package I received was called The Istanbul Spice Box. You can read more about it here. The 3 spice packets I received were Za’atar, Urfa Pepper and Baharat. Honestly, I have never experimented with any recipes or spices from the Turkish area. I was thrilled to be experiencing something totally new to me!
The spice packets come with a flyer that has information about the spices and 3 recipes. I was eager to try their spice blends, but I wasn’t sure were to start. I almost tried the Za’atar & Pita Crust Cauliflower, a recipe included on the flyer, but when I went to their web-site I found a recipe for Za’atar Roasted Chicken.
Their recipe used 4 chicken breasts and was left to marinade for several hours. I just happened to have a whole chicken that needed to be cooked, and didn’t have the time to let it marinade, so I switched up their recipe slightly and came up with Za’atar Whole Roasted Chicken.
When I opened up the packet of the Za’atar spices I had to give it a good sniff. Wow! It was amazing, but the scent that filled the kitchen while the chicken was roasting was even more spectacular. By the time the chicken was done, our appetites were in full force. The chicken was delicious! I am very happy with quality of RawSpiceBar’s spices and I am anxious to try the other 2 spices blends that came in my package.
One of my favorite things about RawSpiceBar is the chance to travel the culinary world, tasting new flavors and trying new recipes, without leaving your own kitchen!
Za’atar Whole Roasted Chicken
1 Whole Chicken
1 Large Onion
1 Large Lemon
1/4 cup Olive Oil
2 – 3 teaspoons Garlic, chopped
Salt and Pepper
2/3 of a package of RawSpiceBar’s Za’atar Spices
I used 1 large onion, sliced it up and layed most of it in the bottom of a roasting dish that I sprayed with non-stick spray.
I then layed the chicken over the onions.I sprinkled the chicken with salt and pepper, and rubbed the olive oil, garlic mixture over the top. I sprinkled about 1/2 of the package of Za’atar over the chicken.
I cut up 1 large lemon into small pieces. I sprinkled a little bit more of their seasoning mix over the top of the lemons. I put most of the lemon into the cavity of the chicken, along with some of the onion, and I layed the rest of the lemons around the chicken.
I then roasted the chicken in a 375 degree oven for about 1 1/2 hours, until them temperature of the chicken was about 165 degrees.
